Difficult

It is really really hard to be half a world apart from the one I love. Fifteen timezones is hard to calculate and the circadium rhythms are all upside down, morning to evening, bedtime to lunch, holy mackeral, I expected it to be a challenge, but this is crazy.

You Don't Have to Eat it All

I realized that the days of finish everything on the plate are long gone.

I was out to breakfast the other morning with my daughter and a friend of hers. As it turned out she and I were going to order the same thing. I suggested that we split it, I wasn't going to eat a whole omelette and she wasn't either. It was the perfect thing to do, because I probably would have eaten more than I need to if not everything on my plate.

Her friend didn't even come close to eating half of her order of french toast.

The mentality of finish it all. Do it all. Get it all done is maybe not the right way to go. Working out in the yard past dark. Doing all the weeding. Over doing it until I become a wreck.

I don't have to do all my laundry on one day. I can do a load here and there. I don't have to do all the filing, get a good start and be happy. Stuff will get put away when it gets put away, I don't have to unpack my suitcase the day I get home from a trip.

I don't have to eat it all.

Yoga Is Hard

I don't know why it still seems to amaze me that yoga is hard. I took a class last night sort of returning to the discipline after a vacation from it. I felt all my muscles that at one time were able to stretch, now all tight again.

I really like the feeling of working my body and it is nice to be at the gym on a Friday night getting some blood flow and some flexibility and balance, but yoga is quite hard, especially if I don't keep it up.

Exercise is Good For You

I figured this out almost all by myself.

I know that long term regular exercise is supposed to be good for you and leads to a healthier life.

But did you know that I feel good after working out? I mean, really, I went to the gym yesterday and I felt good while I was exercising and I felt good when I got back to the office. That put a smile on my face and that is really good for me.

Time Doesn"t Stand Still

Getting older?

Seasons changing?

Days, weeks, months and years marching along?

Guess what? Time doesn't stand still.

McDonalds Should Pay Me

Again today I remembered that McDonalds had to put a warning on its coffee cups that the beverage inside might be hot. Caution. Hot coffee is hot. Beerages made with boiling water are hot and may burn if you pour them in your lap or onto your tongue without due care.

I scoff, but again today I burned by tongue on a cup of tea that I tried to sip mere moments after pouring water from the kettle over the tea bag.

If only there were a way to get McDonalds to compensate me for my sore tongue.

Cold Feet

I think I have cold feet.
Yesterday I was driving to work and adjusted the airflow in my car.
I had it dialed in to defrost and to the floorboard.
I was having trouble with getting just the right temperature.
Ya know closer to blue or closer to red.
After 45 minutes I noticed that I had the A/C on!
No wonder I had cold feet.

Caffeine

Did you know that coffee cures headaches?
Or is it the caffeine addiction that causes headaches?
Did you know that there is such a thing as cause and effect?

Home in Bed

I couldn't have picked a better day to stay home.
The is rain coming down in sheets.
It would be a good day to curl up with a book
And a bowl of soup.
I guess I am sick.

Monologue

If you talk about yourself a lot you may find you have been delivering monologues.

Martin Luther King Day

Taking out the trash this morning I had this eerie feeling.
I was looking around as if something was just not right.
I was driving up to put gas in the car and it hit me.
Today is a holiday.
My commute time was cut in half.
Most of the people in the US have the day off.

The Stairmaster

I went to the gym this morning.
I tried the stairmaster for the first time.
It works the calves and quadriceps, amazing.
I got all sweaty doing it.

Ask and You Shall Receive

A friend of mine manages a really interesting international project. He told me he was looking for someone to manage one of his teams. I asked him if he would consider me for the role. He offered me the position. I am instantly discombobulated, trying to figure out if I want the job, wondering if I was a good fit for it, wondering why he didn't think of me before now.

I was struck by a series of incredible insights that probably fit nicely into the well duh category:
1. If you want something, you could try asking for it.
2. If you ask for something, people will think you want it
3. If you look for opportunities, you might find them
4. You may want to think about what you ask for in case you get it.

Pears Don't Travel but Bananas DO

I think those who package pears for distance just don't show the commitment that banana packers do.

Yoga Instruction

I learned yesterday in my yoga class that we need to breathe oxygen to live.

At this point I am feeling pretty smart, so I thought I would add that yoga is really hard.

Acceleration

Acceleration makes things go faster. My goodness, this just came to me as I was in the gym. I was wondering how to hurry things along and then I realized that acceleration is what makes things go faster.

Second Helpings

I made a dinner of comfort food last night.

When I was making it I didn't realize that's what it was.

It was quite good and I wanted second helpings.

I guess that is not portion control, but the number of portions.

A Bit Sad and Lonely

I took down the Christmas decorations today.

There were so few, but it is the beginning of a grand tradition.

It is admitting that the wonderful holidays are finally over.

It would be unusual if I weren't a bit sad and lonely.

Smart Lady

I got a massage. My lower back has been causing me pain.

She told me that I should be doing stretching and strengthening exercises.

My god, she even told me to be drinking a lot of water.

That's one smart lady.

Pears Don't Travel

It took pre-shaped cardboard and Styrofoam peanuts to get a now-mushy, delicate seasonal pear to the ski-condo. The jug of yoghurt was just fine. The bottle of tomato sauce? Perfect. Pear? Not so much. Almost as if it wasn't made to travel. Who knew.

You don't say?

I have recurring headaches on Saturday mornings. Weird. I wonder if there is something wrong with me...

Cheaper in Redondo

I had my car in for rear brakes. Chatting with my mechanic about car expense and how long we've known each other. Someone else brings in their car and one of the guys asks what's wrong?

Oh "service engine soon light." I jokingly say they will install those for free.

I drive to the supermarket and I notice the "service engine soon light" is on. Oh no. Obvious karma.

So I take it back and tell them. They are checking it out and find a vacuum system hose that is supposed to take the fumes from the gas tank and reburn it out the exhaust. He asked me what I paid for the last job, the effing intake manifold in Carson City. I told him and he said that they forgot to reconnect the vacuum hose and I could have done it cheaper in Redondo.

Insightful Horoscope for Aries

Aries for the week of January 4th, 2010:

Consider scheduling some physical activity for Monday -- either a heavy workout or a long walk or run. You're going to be inundated by details, and an outlet for all that mental frustration could make the day pass more easily. On Tuesday and Wednesday, put the other guy first -- you need to overcome your usual competitiveness (at least this once) if you want to get ahead. Starting on Thursday and on into the start of the weekend, expect some quiet time and deep thinking.

Mental frustration on Monday? Quiet time on the weekend? The week isn't over yet, but I can already see that this horoscope is amazingly accurate.

Playing is Better Than Working

I realized that I am back at my office and was wondering what is wrong with this picture. I had a fabulous vacation and now that I am back to the daily grind I find myself daydreaming about playing. I work so I can take time off to play.

My Mechanic Knows Better Than I Do

"You are not going anywhere tonight," he said. How did he know?

Well Duh !

The UGO has many facets. Most of which can be summed up:

Well Duh !

Here comes the proverbial two by four upside the head. Why do I feel broke when I spend more money than I make? Why do my legs feel tired when I exercise? Why am I hungry when I already ate hours ago?
